Read  REVELATION 21:1-6 SOAP Revelation 21:4

How does the future hope of Revelation 21:4 give us hope in our loneliness and loss today?

1  Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2  And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3  And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.  4  He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” 5  And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6  And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.

O – This is the hope for the believer – whether we are suffering, broken, or just plain weary.  John’s revelation of heaven is a promise that will be fulfilled – and we will be with HIM!  What will it be like?

  • A holy city – prepared as a bride. I imagine it is “decked out” in its finest – pure and holy (v. 2)
  • God will dwell with us, His people. He will be WITH us!  We will be WITH HIM!
  • He will wipe away every tear
  • Death will be no more
  • No mourning, or crying, or pain
  • ALL things are new – the old life is passed away
  • Everlasting life. For ever.

God, from His throne, tells John to “write this down”…… THIS IS IMPORTANT!   What God is saying is “trustworthy and true”.  IT IS DONE.   Just like Jesus’ words at his death – “It is finished.”   Done.  A new heaven and a new earth.  A holy city.  God dwelling with man.  Forever.   Eternity.  IT IS DONE!

A – This is looking at life from the eternal perspective.  While on earth, I will have suffering an pain, and sorrow.  Not so in heaven.  God Himself will wipe away every tear.  What a gentle gesture!  Our all-powerful God, the Holy God, wiping away our tears.  Tenderness amidst the glory.

This is promise for the future.  But more than that – it is promise for now.  Now won’t last forever.  It will end.  The forever is glory with Him.

P – Father, thank You for that hope of heaven – coming when You finish preparing a place for us.  You will prepare heaven as a place for eternity.  You are preparing now.  And, You are preparing me to live there, with You, forever.  Thank You for the promise of eternity with You – and for removing all sickness, and pain, and sorrow.  You will remove our brokenness, and replace it with new life.  Father, I look forward to that time.   Prepare me, today, so that I will be ready.  Ready to be with You.  Forever.  Amen.

“Every Tear” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxkHU246jtA

The world just took another spin in the wrong direction
Hate found a handgun
And now nobody feels safe
I gotta turn off the news
So my kids don’t see another tragedy
I wanna let em stay innocent at least for one more day

Just when I think it can’t get worse
It gets worse
There are no words to say
How much more can our hearts take?

In this shattered place where our shadows cover
Where we speak of love while we hurt each other
My heart aches for home right now more than ever
But I’m holding on to the hope of heaven
And the promise that the day is drawing near
You will wipe away every tear
You will wipe away every tear

There will be no more terror
No more riots in the street
And we will all be seen beyond the color of our skin
No more fighting, no more war, no more hunger left ignored
No more sickness no more pain
We are here for now but we won’t stay
