Week One – Day 4.   Thursday, January 19, 2017wk01d04

Read Proverbs 3:19-26.  SOAP Proverbs 3:19-20

PROVERBS 3:19-26 19 The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; 20 by his knowledge the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the dew. 21 My son, do not lose sight of these— keep sound wisdom and discretion, 22 and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck. 23 Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble. 24 If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. 25 Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes, 26 for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.

O – Here we see wisdom, understanding, and knowledge linked again – this time to the Lord’s (God’s) creation of the earth. He founded it, established it, and “broke up the deeps” and make the clouds drip with dew. Wisdom (chokmah) – skill and shrewdness . Understanding – (tabuwn) – intelligence and insight. Knowledge (da`ath ) – perception, discernment. God’s characteristics include this over-encompassing skill and insight – but with the ability to discern. That is far above what we can do! He is omniscient – all-knowing. And, if He can create, with just a word, how much MORE knowing is HE than me?

We are cautioned to remember this – to “not lose sight of” – to keep in focus. Wisdom and discretion will give us life – but also be recognizable to those around us. The Amplified Version gives a little clarification to this in verse 22: And they will be life to your soul (your inner self) And a gracious adornment to your neck (your outer self).
If we do this (not lose sight of…), THEN we will walk on our way (our journey in life) securely, not stumbling. We will not be afraid when we sleep (when we are vulnerable) and our sleep will be pleasant and sweet. We will not have to be afraid of “sudden terrors” or the “storm of the wicked” WHEN (not IF) it comes – for God is our confidence. He will keep us from stumbling.

Notes from study from Strong’s Concordance and lumina.bible.org…..
Heb “founded the earth.” The verb יָסַד (yasad, “to establish; to found”) describes laying the foundation of a building
The theme of God’s use of wisdom in creation is developed in Prov 8:22-31. Because God established the world to operate according to the principle of wisdom it is impossible for anyone to live successfully in his world apart from the wisdom that only God can give.
The two colons form a merism: The wisdom of God is behind all forces of nature, whether the violent breaking forth of its watery forces at creation or the provision of the gentle rain and dew throughout history (T. T. Perowne, Proverbs, 55).
The verb נָגַף (ragaf, “to strike; to smite”) sometimes means “to stumble” against a stone (e.g., Ps 91:12). Here the object (“stone”) is implied (BDB 619 s.v.). This is a figure (hypocatastasis) comparing stumbling on a stone in the path to making serious mistakes in life that bring harm.

A – What is the IF – THEN in this passage?
IF: we don’t lose sight of the wisdom and discretion that God provides – living in a way that it affects our inner and outer life (attitudes and behavior).
THEN: we will be secure in our journey in life, we won’t stumble and fall, we will sleep at peace, and not live in fear
BECAUSE: God is our confidence!

Do I seek out His wisdom, the wisdom of the God who created the universe? Do I recognize that He is God and I am not? Is my life lived in such a way that my heart is in the right place (inner life) and it is recognizable to those around me (adornment around my neck – my outer life that is lived out in front of others)? Do they match up?

P – Father God, Creator of the Universe, You are Almighty God. I seek Your wisdom for my life, knowing that You alone know the right way in my journey of life. May Your wisdom give life to me, and be the grace adorning my neck. May those around me see Your power and love within me – and in what I say and do. I relinquish the plans of my life to You – so You can work out the details of my journey. Thank You for Your love for me, and Your protection. I live in praise for You today.

A Thousand Generations (Brenton Brown) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WReNThMWdM

You have been faithful to a thousand generations
Slow to anger, swift to bless
Your hand has guided us through every situation
Your loving kindness hasn’t failed us yet

God, You are my God
You are my God
I will live to sing Your praises
God, joy of my heart, You are my rock
You are faithful through the ages

The day will come when every
Eye on earth will see You
When every heart and every voice will say
That You are perfect in Your wisdom And Your justice
God how we long to see that Glorious day

You’re God of heaven’s armies
You’re God of galaxies
Valleys rise up to meet You
The mountains bow their knees
Creation stands in wonder
At all that You’ve achieved
And You have set Your love on me

Though You may lead us Through the valley of the shadow
We will rise to see You face to face
And we will gather with the saints
In that great city Where every sorrow will be washed away

Always faithful through the ages
You’ve been faithful through the ages
