Read  PSALM 103 (ESV) Of David.   SOAP  v 10-11

103 Bless the Lord, O my soul,  and all that is within me, bless his holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,  and forget not all his benefits, 3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit,  who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, 5 who satisfies you with good    so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. 6 The Lord works righteousness    and justice for all who are oppressed. 7 He made known his ways to Moses,    his acts to the people of Israel. 8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 9 He will not always chide,    nor will he keep his anger forever. 10 He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. 13 As a father shows compassion to his children,  so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. 14 For he knows our frame;    he remembers that we are dust. 15 As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; 16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,    and its place knows it no more. 17 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him,    and his righteousness to children’s children, 18 to those who keep his covenant    and remember to do his commandments. 19 The Lord has established his throne in the heavens,    and his kingdom rules over all. 20 Bless the Lord, O you his angels,    you mighty ones who do his word,    obeying the voice of his word! 21 Bless the Lord, all his hosts,    his ministers, who do his will! 22 Bless the Lord, all his works,    in all places of his dominion. Bless the Lord, O my soul!

O – As I read through this Psalm this morning in my Bible, I noted two things that David rejoices over:  Who God is, and what He has done.  This psalm is a call to praise God from the outset:  “Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name!”

Who God Is:

  • Compassionate
  • Gracious
  • Slow to anger
  • Abounding in love
  • Will not always accuse
  • Will not hold His anger forever
  • Has love for us – the love of a father
  • Knows us intimately – knows we are dust
  • Loves with an everlasting love – through the generations – steadfast love
  • Ruler over all – established His throne in heaven

What He has Done:

  • He “benefits” us
  • Forgives our sin
  • Heals our disease
  • Redeems our life from the pit
  • Crowns us with love and compassion
  • Satisfies our desires with good things
  • Renews our “youth” like the eagles
  • Works righteousness and justice for the oppressed
  • Made His ways known to Moses and the Israelites – He reveals Himself
  • Doesn’t treat us as our sins deserve (merciful)
  • Doesn’t repay us according to our iniquities
  • Removed our transgressions from us

Even after these “lists,” we are called again to praise Him.  But – not only us – but the angels the heavenly hosts, and all His works.  Praise the Lord, O my soul…..

A – Grace – getting what I don’t deserve.  Mercy – NOT getting what I do deserve.  God has given me both.  He hasn’t treated me the way my sins deserve – and YET – He loves me beyond measure.  As high as the heavens are above the earth – SO GREAT is His love for me!  And my sins are removed as far as the east is from the west.  Grace and mercy.  All mine.  Because He loves me.

What is my “reasonable service?”  What is my “thank you” for this?  First – “offer my body as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – THIS is my spiritual act of worship.”  (Romans 12:1)  Second – “Praise the Lord – oh my soul and ALL that is within me – praise the Lord.”  (Psalm 103;1)  What is “within me?”  My heart, soul, strength, mind…..  “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30)  That’s ALL that I am!

P – Father God, thank You is not enough for me to say for all that You have done for me.  When I look at even this list today, it is SO FAR beyond what I deserve.  I don’t deserve Your love.  But, I also see, in so many ways, that You give freely of Your love, as You created me, molded me, formed me – because You loved the thought of me.  Thank You for that reminder last night from “Uninvited” –  I was created by God, who formed me because He so much loved the very thought of me.  When I was nothing, He saw something, and declared it good.  Very good. And very loved.”  Thank You for Your love, Your grace, and Your mercy, O my Father.  Bless the Lord, o my soul, and all that is within me.  Amen.
