Read  COLOSSIANS 3:1-17 (ESV)   SOAP  v 1 – 3wk4d4

3 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. 12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

O/A – I see a few words that stick out in this passage, and they are all decisive actions that are the result of “FOR you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”  BECAUSE I have died with Christ, I can (better yet – I will…) be able to:

  • SEEK the things that are above –
    • (“ keep seeking the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. – AMP) –
    • NOT the “stuff” here on earth!
  • SET my mind on things that are above, NOT on things that are on earth –
    • (Set your mind and keep focused habitually on the things above [the heavenly things], not on things that are on the earth [which have only temporal value].” – AMP) –
    • keep focused HABITUALLY – that means “practice”!
  • PUT to death what is earthly in me: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, covetousness (that is idolatry!) –
    • (“So put to death and deprive of power the evil longings of your earthly body [with its sensual, self-centered instincts] immorality, impurity, sinful passion, evil desire, and greed, which is [a kind of] idolatry [because it replaces your devotion to God]. – AMP) –
    • deprive of power – that’s what we need God to do with all this earthly desires and actions.  And – we have power in the name of Jesus!
  • PUT them away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, obscene talk
    • (“rid yourselves [completely] of all these things: anger, rage, malice, slander, and obscene (abusive, filthy, vulgar) language from your mouth.” – AMP)
    • Rid my self of them completely….. that means I need to watch what I see, what I hear, what I allow into the heart of me…
  • PUT off the old self – so do not lie –
    • Do not lie to one another, for you have stripped off the old self with its evil practices,
  • PUT ON the new self! – it is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator –
    • and have put on the new [spiritual] self who is being continuallyrenewed in true knowledge in the image of Him who created the new self
  • PUT ON (as God’s chosen ones – holy and beloved) compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, bearing with one another, forgiving one another as Christ has forgiven me
    • (“So, as God’s own chosen people, who are holy [set apart, sanctified for His purpose] and well-beloved [by God Himself], put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience [which has the power to endure whatever injustice or unpleasantness comes, with good temper]; 13 bearing graciously with one another, and willingly forgiving each other if one has a cause for complaint against another; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so should you forgive.´- AMP)
  • Above all these, PUT ON love – it binds everything together in perfect harmony –
    • (“Beyond all these things put on and wrap yourselves in [unselfish] love, which is the perfect bond of unity [for everything is bound together in agreement when each one seeks the best for others]” – AMP)
    • Just like we “put on” clothing…. We need to “put on” love – wrap ourselves up in it!!

And then there’s the “LET’s”

  • LET the peace of Christ rule in your hearts –
    • Let the peace of Christ [the inner calm of one who walks daily with Him] be the controlling factor in your hearts [deciding and settling questions that arise].
    • The controlling factor in your hearts! THAT is powerful!
  • Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly – teaching and teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God –
    • Let the [spoken] word of Christ have its home within you [dwelling in your heart and mind—permeating every aspect of your being] as you teach [spiritual things] and admonish andtrain one another with all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” – AMP)
    • Love this – “permeating every aspect of your being…”

AND – and this is a big AND – WHATEVER YOU DO,  in word or deed, do EVERYTHING in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.  –

  • (“Whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus [and in dependence on Him], giving thanks to God the Father through Him.´- AMP)
  • NO MATTER WHAT IT IS…. Do it in the name of Jesus AND in dependence on Him – THAT is the key!

A – What are the results of forgiveness?  Not only am I a new creation, I have a new mindset.  It gives me the strength to live the way God intended.  That “new self” (v. 10) is “being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator… BUT Christ is all, and in all.”  (v. 11)  This allows me to live in victory, today, and in the days to follow.

That word “practice” comes up again!   “seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices….”  (v. 9)  AND – it is combined with “PUT OFF”.  It is a decisive action.  Put off.  Get rid of.  Having nothing to do with.  It is determined action to “put off.”  So – PUT OFF the old self!

P – Father God, You again convict me.  I think You want me to understand the difference between sin and practicing sin.  What am I practicing?  Father, search  the inner part of me, the dark corners, and point out the things I practice.  Father, clean out those cobwebs of sin, sweep them clean, and help me to keep my heart clean.  Thank You that I am a new creation – and have a new mindset.  Keep me in that mindset, Father.  I am seeing more and more that I have to DAILY practice Your presence.  To DAILY set my mind.  To DAILY seek You.  TO DAILY put to death any sin in my life.  You remind me in Your word that Christ’s death brings forgiveness.  It also gives me the power to resist sin – reject its power over me.  Thank You for Jesus Christ – my Cornerstone.  Help me to Trust ONLY in Him.  Amen.

“Cornerstone”
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust in Jesus name

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust in Jesus name

Christ alone; cornerstone
Weak made strong; in the Saviour’s love
Through the storm, He is Lord
Lord of all

When Darkness seems to hide His face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
My anchor holds within the veil

Christ alone; cornerstone
Weak made strong; in the Saviour’s love
Through the storm, He is Lord
Lord of all
He is Lord
Lord of all

Christ alone; cornerstone
Weak made strong; in the Saviour’s love
Through the storm, He is Lord
Lord of all

Christ alone; cornerstone
Weak made strong; in the Saviour’s love
Through the storm, He is Lord
Lord of all

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless stand before the throne.
