Put on the Whole Armor of God (video) –

Ephesians 6:10-18 (ESV)

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

O – Preparing for battle …..   How should I prepare?  God has given us everything we need to be successful in the battle against the schemes of the devil.  First of all, we need to be strong IN THE LORD, not in our own power.   We also need to put on the WHOLE armor of God, not just part of it.  It is a decision to PUT ON; it is not passive.  It is both defensive and offensive – so we can stand against the tricks (schemes, wiles, strategies and deceits) of the devil.  We don’t see our enemy – it is a spiritual battle!  It is not even a person – it is spiritual forces of evil.  SO – we need to take up the WHOLE armor of God, so we can withstand the devil and to STAND firm.  God has given us tools to fight this battle…..

  • The belt of truth – tightened around your loins
  • The breastplate of righteousness – integrity, moral rectitude and right standing with God
  • The shoes of the gospel of peace – firm footed stability and the readiness produced by the good news of the gospel
  • The shield of faith – the covering shield of saving in faith – with which you can quench all the falling mussels of the wicked one
  • The helmet of salvation
  • The sword of the Spirit – the word of God
  • To pray at ALL times in the Spirit
  • AND to keep alert with perseverance – strong purpose and perseverance (explanations by Amplified Version)

A – I am finding more and more that it is a DECISION to follow Christ.  It is a choice, not a whim, or just “because.”  It is a DECISION.   And in battles that are mora, or fighting temptation, it is deciding to do the right thing, to follow Christ, to not sin, to fight off the devil.  And, it is comforting to know that God has provided the tools to do this:  His truth, protecting myself with HIS righteousness, the preparedness of the gospel, the covering of faith in Him, the protection of my head with His salvation, the Sword of the Spirit or the Word of God, and prayer.  But it is also His presence.  It is being strong IN HIM and HIS power, not mine.  I need to continually remind myself that it is His power, not mine, that helps me to not give in to temptation.  It is His power that fights off the darkness – both within and from the devil.  It is HIS power that gives me strength. to go on in times of challenge and despair.  It is HIS power that gives me strength and wisdom to stand firm.

P – Father God, make me strong in Your Power, and in Your might.  Let me not lean on my own understanding and my own power.  I know that I am not strong enough to withstand without You.  Thank You for giving me all that I need to be strong in YOU – and to STAND FIRM.  I know that with Your strength and power, I CAN withstand the tricks of the devil, but not without You.  Keep me in Your protection.

There is no doubt that our lives are filled with visible and invisible battles. Looking at Ephesians 6:10-13, how are we to prepare for these battles?
